Crowned the Cycling Book of the Year at the 2024 Sports Book Awards, this captivating work by Ned Boulting has also earned its place amongst Waterstones' finest sports books of 2023 and secured a nomination for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2023. Described as 'an absorbing mix of historical sleuthing and travel writing' by The Telegraph, and lauded as 'fascinating and often touching' by The Times, this book promises a riveting journey through time and across France.
The tale begins in the autumn of 2020 when Boulting, ITV's head cycling commentator and Tour de France enthusiast, acquires a mysterious piece of Path news film from a London auction house. Initially aware only of its connection to the Tour de France, Boulting's restoration of the film reveals a brief 2.5-minute glimpse into stage 4 of the 1923 Tour, featuring a solitary cyclist crossing a bridge.
With the tenacity of a detective and the passion of a true cycling aficionado, Boulting embarks on a meticulous investigation of the footage. He scrutinises every frame, face, and structure, extracting every morsel of information from this fleeting moment in time. His quest for understanding propels him down intriguing paths, blending elements of travelogue, historical research, and mystery-solving.
Readers are invited to accompany Boulting on this enthralling expedition, delving into the rich tapestry of cycling history and exploring the landscape of France a mere five years after the conclusion of the First World War. '1923: The Mystery of Lot 212 and a Tour de France Obsession' offers a unique window into a pivotal era, viewed through the lens of one of cycling's most prestigious events.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
