Discover the Chinese equivalent of "The Lord of the Rings", now available in English for the first time. This literary phenomenon has captivated Chinese readers for decades, selling an astounding 300 million copies and earning a place on Time Magazine's list of the 100 Best Fantasy Novels of All Time.
As the New Yorker's Nick Frisch aptly puts it, "Jin Yong's work, in the Chinese-speaking world, has a cultural currency roughly equal to that of 'Harry Potter' and 'Star Wars' combined". The Daily Mail's Jamie Buxton describes it as "Like every fairy tale you've ever loved, imbued with jokes and epic grandeur. Prepare to be swept along".
Set in 13th century China, the Song Empire faces invasion from the formidable Jurchen forces. As half the realm falls to the enemy, including the historic capital, the vanquished populace struggles under the weight of tribute demanded by their conquerors. Meanwhile, on the Mongolian steppes, a legendary figure emerges to unite a fierce warrior nation: Genghis Khan.
Enter Guo Jing, the son of a slain Song patriot, raised amongst Genghis Khan's army. This humble and loyal, if not entirely sagacious, young man is destined to face an adversary who is his polar opposite: a privileged, cunning individual with impeccable martial arts training.
Guided by his devoted mentors, The Seven Heroes of the South, Guo Jing must return to his homeland - specifically, the Garden of the Drunken Immortals in Jiaxing - to fulfil his preordained role. However, in a fractured land torn asunder by conflict and treachery, his valour and allegiances will be tested at every turn.
This masterpiece of Chinese literature, meticulously translated by Anna Holmwood, invites English-speaking readers to embark on an unforgettable journey through a rich tapestry of history, fantasy, and martial arts.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
