Shortlisted for prestigious literary accolades, this newly paperback edition of Dorthe Nors' masterpiece offers a captivating exploration of Denmark's untamed coastal regions. One of the nation's most celebrated authors invites readers on an exhilarating journey along the windswept shores stretching from Denmark's northernmost point to the Netherlands.
With razor-sharp observation and lyrical prose, Nors paints a vivid portrait of a world shaped by tempestuous seas and resilient inhabitants. From intrepid cold-water surfers to steadfast sailors' wives, the narrative weaves together a tapestry of human endurance against nature's raw power.
This extraordinary voyage through time and memory delves deep into the author's familial roots, intertwining personal recollections with the rich history etched into the landscape. Nors' spellbinding narrative style transforms the coastline into a character in its own right, brimming with tales of shipwrecks, storm surges, and the indomitable spirit of those who call this rugged terrain home.
Praised by literary luminaries and critics alike, 'A Line in the World' has been hailed as a "beautiful, melancholy account of finding home on a restless coast" by Katherine May. Max Porter lauds Nors as "a singular prose stylist" and "such a great companion, honest and curious and surprising". The Financial Times describes it as "a place brimming with memories and strangeness", while the New York Times declares it "a personal, poetic meditation on this remote edge of windswept landscapes and wildwaters".
Perfect for those seeking a winter read that embraces the raw beauty of frost-bitten winds and dark nights, this mesmerising work offers readers a deep dive into a coastal landscape that is both breathtaking and hypnotic. Dorthe Nors' 'A Line in the World' is an unmissable literary journey that will captivate and inspire in equal measure.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
