Crowned the Scottish Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2021 and lauded by the Financial Times, i paper, and Stylist, Peter Ross's 'A Tomb With a View' is a captivating exploration of the world's final resting places. From the sombre fields of Flanders to the bustling ossuaries of Europe, Ross guides readers through a poignant journey of remembrance and discovery.
Hilary Mantel praises Ross's thoughtful approach to the timely subject of mortality, while The Guardian commends his evocative prose and deep humanity. This unexpected "sleeper" success has become a beacon of light in a year shadowed by death, offering a strangely optimistic perspective on the inevitable.
Ross's lively elegy to Britain's most fascinating burial grounds brims with life and anecdote. He uncovers remarkable tales, from David Bowie's connection to London's outcast dead to the astonishing life of Phoebe Hessel, who disguised herself as a man to fight alongside her beloved. Even a Bristol cemetery's unlikely popularity as a goth wedding venue finds its place in this rich tapestry of stories.
Praised by literary luminaries such as Andrew O'Hagan, Ian Rankin, and Robert Macfarlane, 'A Tomb With a View' stands alongside works by Kathleen Jamie and Robert Macfarlane in its lyrical exploration of landscape and memory. It's a celebration of life and love that confronts our universal fate with a comforting embrace of mortality.
So, dear reader, push open the rusting gate, brush aside the ivy, and embark on a grave new world of fascination and delight. For anyone who has ever wandered through a field of crooked headstones and pondered the lives behind them, this book promises a journey through the stories and glories of graveyards that you won't soon forget.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
