Embark on a captivating journey through the forgotten corners of our world. This extraordinary atlas unveils a collection of abandoned, enigmatic, and slumbering monuments that have slipped into the shadows of history. From ancient ruins and decaying castles to more contemporary relics—such as a disused art deco subway station in New York, a deserted Soviet settlement in the Arctic Circle, or a submerged Thai shopping centre teeming with aquatic life—Travis Elborough guides you through these curious and vanishing realms.
With meticulous attention to detail, Elborough presents 40 unique locations through a series of bespoke maps, each accompanied by poignant historical and geographical narratives. These evocative accounts breathe life into these forsaken places, unravelling their stories and revealing the circumstances of their abandonment. Among the featured sites are the festive ghost town of Santa Claus, Arizona; London's hidden underground marvel, the Crystal Palace Subway; the volcano-ravaged island of Montserrat; the clandestine Soviet submarine base in Balaklava; and the notorious Volterra Psychiatric Hospital in Tuscany, once ominously dubbed 'the place of no return'.
This compelling atlas is a treasure trove for armchair explorers and intrepid souls alike, offering a glimpse into strange and surreal abandoned sites across the globe. From eerie ghost towns to colossal undersea monuments, each location tells a tale of human ambition, natural forces, and the inexorable passage of time. Following the success of the award-winning 'Atlas of Vanishing Places', this volume continues to uncover lesser-known histories of hidden, fascinating locations worldwide.
'Atlas of Forgotten Places' is part of the acclaimed Unexpected Atlas series, which includes 'Atlas of Improbable Places', 'Atlas of Untamed Places', 'Atlas of the Unexpected', and 'Atlas of Vanishing Places'—winner of the Illustrated Book of the Year at the 2020 Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
