Hailed as the literary triumph of the 21st century, Barbara Kingsolver's 'Demon Copperhead' has captivated readers and critics alike. This Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, twice honoured with the Women's Prize, has also garnered nominations for the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction and the James Tait Black Prize for Fiction. A Sunday Times bestseller and BBC Radio 4 Book at Bedtime selection, it's no wonder this opus has sold millions of copies worldwide.
Lauded by literary luminaries such as Kate Atkinson, Marian Keyes, and Rachel Joyce, 'Demon Copperhead' is a tour de force that has been described as 'epic', 'righteously angry', and 'exquisitely written'. Critics from The Times, Daily Mail, and Guardian have praised its daring narrative, electrifying prose, and sheer power.
At its heart, 'Demon Copperhead' is a once-in-a-generation tale that shatters and mends the reader's heart with unparalleled finesse. The narrative follows Demon, born in a single-wide trailer to a lone mother, resembling 'a little blue prizefighter'. His journey through life in the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia is a testament to resilience, charm, and wit in the face of crushing poverty and the modern opioid crisis.
Kingsolver's masterful storytelling brings to life a world where addiction isn't an abstract concept, but a harsh reality affecting neighbours, parents, and friends. Through Demon's eyes, we witness a raw portrayal of family life, from reluctant foster care to the elusive dream of affection and security.
Infused with truth, rage, and compassion, 'Demon Copperhead' is an epic odyssey of love, loss, and the indomitable human spirit. It's a narrative that will resonate long after the final page is turned, cementing Kingsolver's status as one of the most formidable voices in contemporary literature.
Readers have been universally moved by this tour de force, praising Kingsolver's ability to inhabit a character with such empathy and fullness. Many have hailed it as one of the greatest books they've ever read, citing its raw emotion, stark beauty, and ability to restore faith in the power of fiction.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
