In this riveting follow-up to Empireland, Sathnam Sanghera, the acclaimed author and journalist, embarks on a global odyssey to unravel the complex tapestry of British imperial legacies. Empireworld, an instant Sunday Times bestseller, delves into the far-reaching consequences of the British empire, extending its gaze beyond Britain's shores to the wider world.
Sanghera's meticulous research takes him to former imperial outposts, from the Caribbean to Africa and Asia. With the precision of a detective and the eloquence of a storyteller, he peels back the layers of history to reveal a nuanced portrait of the empire's impact. The author challenges the simplistic notion of weighing the empire's merits against its misdeeds, instead illuminating the intricate and often contradictory forces that have shaped our modern world.
This ground-breaking work explores how the British empire, while built on the foundations of slavery, paradoxically championed abolition. It examines how imperial rule sowed the seeds of democracy whilst simultaneously planting the roots of geopolitical instability. Sanghera's keen observations extend to the empire's environmental legacy, juxtaposing its role in nature's devastation with its inadvertent contribution to the birth of modern environmentalism.
Empireworld is not merely a historical account; it's a vital lens through which to view our present and future. Sanghera's incisive analysis offers readers a deeper understanding of how the echoes of empire continue to reverberate in today's global landscape, challenging us to reconsider our place within it.
Lauded by critics and readers alike, this masterful exploration of imperial legacies has been hailed as 'profoundly moving' by Elizabeth Day and 'an absolute masterpiece' by James O'Brien. Empireworld cements Sanghera's position as a formidable voice in the realm of imperial history, offering an essential and timely perspective on the forces that have shaped our interconnected world.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
