Manderley Press proudly unveils a fresh edition of Helene Hanff's 'Letter from New York', a literary gem from the acclaimed author of '84, Charing Cross Road'. This captivating volume boasts a new introduction by New York Times bestselling author Jean Hanff Korelitz, Helene's cousin and literary protégé, alongside a bespoke cover illustration by New Yorker artist Bruce Eric Kaplan.
Originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, this collection of scripts offers a delightful peek into Hanff's New York life, crafted with British listeners in mind. With her signature wit and warmth, Hanff whisks readers to the heart of 1980s Manhattan, regaling us with tales of her favourite haunts, companions, and pets, all whilst navigating life in a New York high-rise—"the last small town in America".
Join Hanff as she introduces us to Bentley, the endearing Old English Sheepdog next door; meanders through Central Park's enchanting Shakespeare's Garden; and revels in the city's vibrant parades, including the emerald-hued St Patrick's Day spectacular. Meet her eclectic circle of friends: glamorous Arlene, whose lifestyle contrasts sharply with Hanff's modest writer's existence, and Nina, whose 16th-floor garden brims with flora and fruit trees. Follow Hanff to London as she celebrates the theatrical adaptation of her bestseller, '84, Charing Cross Road'.
What began as a six-month experiment in 1978 blossomed into a six-year love affair between Hanff and her radio audience, each broadcast a heartfelt ode to her beloved Big Apple. Long before 'Friends' or 'Sex and the City', these five-minute vignettes offered both New Yorkers and international listeners a chance to savour the everyday magic and hidden treasures of city life.
Four decades on, 'Letter from New York' remains an enchanting read—a timeless and beguiling portrait of daily life in the metropolis, penned by one of the 20th century's most cherished authors.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
