In a desperate bid to preserve humanity, a select group embarks on a perilous journey into the cosmos. But their mission to save our species may prove futile if they cannot first ensure their own survival.
Mary Robinette Kowal, the acclaimed Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award winner, hails 'The Deep Sky' as "a meticulously crafted enigma, seamlessly blending intimate character study with heart-pounding suspense". Book Riot concurs, declaring it "amongst the finest debut novels of the year".
As Earth teeters on the brink of environmental catastrophe, a lone vessel carries humanity's last hope: 80 exceptional individuals, chosen to birth a new generation amidst the stars. However, their journey takes a sinister turn when, halfway to their destination, a deadly explosion claims three lives and sends The Phoenix careening off course. All eyes turn to Asuka, the sole witness, now thrust into the role of prime suspect.
As the investigation unfolds aboard the ship, poignant flashbacks illuminate Asuka's path to selection. Despite facing challenges during her training on Earth, she was ultimately chosen to represent Japan—a nation she knows only in part as a half-Japanese woman raised in America. With her relationship to her mother in tatters, The Phoenix has become Asuka's only remaining connection.
As suspicion and paranoia threaten to tear the crew apart, Asuka races against time to unmask the true culprit. She must solve the mystery before faith in their mission crumbles—or worse, the saboteur strikes again.
Garnering widespread acclaim, 'The Deep Sky' has been recognised as a Washington Post Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Novel of 2023, a Kirkus Reviews Best Debut of 2023, a Goodreads Choice nominee for Best Science Fiction, and a Tor.com Must-Read Sci-Fi Release of 2023.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
