Breaking news! The Times has crowned 'The House in Cornwall' as Children's Book of the Week for July 2024, and it's been featured on BBC Radio Cornwall. Manderley Press proudly presents a fresh edition of this forgotten gem by Noel Streatfeild, penned during wartime and set against the backdrop of Cornwall's seaside.
To commemorate this extraordinary tale, we've enlisted the talents of Lucy Mangan, esteemed Guardian journalist and devoted Streatfeild enthusiast, to craft a new introduction. Mangan delves into the book's significance within the author's broader body of work.
Brace yourself for a thrilling cocktail of peril, intrigue, and rebellion! Composed at the dawn of World War II, this gripping narrative follows the Chandler siblings - John, Sorrel, Wish, and Edward - as they embark on a summer holiday at their Uncle Murdoch's grand Cornish abode, Tregon Hall.
The children's initial excitement swiftly dissipates upon arrival from Paddington. They're met with an unwelcoming uncle, peculiar servants, and find themselves virtual captives in their relative's dwelling. A perfect page-turner for readers aged eight and above, this vintage-style thriller delivers suspense and swift pacing in spades.
Streatfeild, born in Sussex in 1895, was the daughter of a clergyman. Her early years in St Leonard's-on-Sea and Eastbourne left her yearning for adventure beyond the confines of vicarage life. A budding thespian, she trained at London's Academy of Dramatic Art before treading the boards professionally. Her transition to writing bore fruit with 'Ballet Shoes', which clinched the Carnegie Medal. Streatfeild's contributions to literature were recognised with an OBE in 1983, three years before her passing.
