Embark on a millennium-long journey through the life of a majestic oak tree! This enchanting tale begins with a tiny acorn that falls to the earth a thousand years ago. As time marches on, it grows into a towering oak, becoming a silent witness to history.
Throughout the centuries, the tree becomes a focal point for human activity. Children frolic around its trunk, families celebrate beneath its branches, and even a king seeks refuge within its hollow core. The oak also provides sustenance and shelter to a diverse array of wildlife, from nimble squirrels and curious badgers to chirping birds and busy beetles.
After a millennium of standing tall, the ancient oak finally succumbs to a fierce storm. However, the circle of life continues as a new acorn takes root, ready to begin the cycle anew.
Julia Donaldson's rich, lyrical rhyme brings this magical story to life, while Victoria Sandoy's stunning illustrations capture the changing seasons and the myriad creatures and people who interact with the tree over time. Young readers will delight in spotting the various animals hidden in the pictures and observing how children's games evolve through the ages.
This captivating book encourages readers to develop a deeper appreciation for nature and the wonders of ancient trees. The final pages offer fascinating facts about oak trees and their ecological importance.
Julia Donaldson, one of Britain's most celebrated children's authors, has crafted yet another masterpiece. Her previous work, 'The Christmas Pine', also illustrated by Victoria Sandoy, has been praised for its magical quality and its celebration of tradition, children, and music.
As the recipient of a CBE for her contributions to literature, Donaldson continues to enchant readers worldwide. Many of her beloved picture books have been adapted into award-winning animated films, which have become a cherished part of BBC's Christmas programming.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
