Widely regarded as a masterpiece of travel literature, 'Venice' defies conventional categorisation. Neither a guidebook nor a historical tome, it offers readers an exquisitely crafted immersion into the very essence of Venetian life and character, all set against the rich tapestry of the city's past. Morris delves deep into the Venetian psyche, exploring the city's labyrinthine waterways, architectural marvels, iconic bridges, and the ebb and flow of tourists. With meticulous attention to detail, she paints a vivid picture of Venice's peculiarities, aromas, sounds, and kaleidoscopic hues, leaving no stone unturned in her quest to bring the city to life on the page.
Morris's love affair with Venice began during her youth as James Morris, amidst the tumult of World War II. This early encounter imbues the work with a unique perspective, as Morris notes, 'it is Venice seen through a particular pair of eyes at a particular moment - young eyes at that, responsive above all to the stimuli of youth.' The result is a passionate, sometimes exasperated, but always captivating portrait of this enigmatic city.
With a career spanning over five decades, Jan Morris has established herself as a titan of travel writing. Her impressive oeuvre includes acclaimed works such as 'Sydney', 'Coronation Everest', and 'Manhattan '45'. Since its initial publication, 'Venice' has graced countless bookshelves, clinched the prestigious W.H. Heinemann award, and ascended to the ranks of international bestsellers. Critics have lavished praise upon it, with the Sunday Times boldly proclaiming it 'The best book about Venice ever written', while the Observer asserts that 'No sensible visitor should visit the place without it... Venice stands alone as the essential introduction, and as a work of literature in its own right.'

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
