Long before it graced the silver screen or trod the boards of the National Theatre, War Horse captivated readers as a beloved children's novel penned by Michael Morpurgo, one of Britain's most cherished storytellers.
Set against the harrowing backdrop of the Great War, this poignant tale unfolds through the eyes of Joey, a valiant steed thrust into the heart of the conflict. As artillery shells rain down and bullets whiz past, unseating riders, Joey's journey offers a unique perspective on the brutality of war from both sides of No Man's Land. His narrative weaves a tapestry of unwavering friendship amidst the chaos of battle.
This equine protagonist bears witness to humanity at its best and worst, experiencing the savagery of combat and the serenity of peace. War Horse is his testament, a powerful chronicle of resilience and hope.
Morpurgo's masterpiece has since inspired Steven Spielberg's acclaimed film adaptation, featuring Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, and Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as a triumphant stage production that has enthralled audiences in London's West End and on Broadway since its 2007 debut.
War Horse serves as an ideal introduction for young readers to the harsh realities of the First World War. For those captivated by Morpurgo's wartime narratives, his other works such as Friend or Foe, Waiting for Anya, King of the Cloud Forests, and An Eagle in the Snow come highly recommended.
Hailed by The Guardian for his 'happy knack of speaking to both child and adult readers', Morpurgo crafts in War Horse a universal tale of suffering and endurance that resonates across generations. With over a hundred books to his name and a slew of prestigious accolades including the Whitbread Award, Smarties Award, Circle of Gold Award, and Children's Book Award - not to mention four Carnegie Medal nominations - Michael Morpurgo stands as a titan of children's literature.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
