Wildwood, a cherished masterpiece of nature writing by Roger Deakin, the environmentalist behind Waterlog, delves into the intricate relationship between wood, nature, culture, and human existence. This captivating exploration has been hailed as 'breathtaking' and 'vividly written' by the Sunday Times, with one reader likening Deakin's prose to the effortless grace of a blackbird's song.
Embarking from his Suffolk abode, Deakin undertakes a remarkable odyssey spanning Britain, Europe, Central Asia, and Australia. His quest: to unravel the profound connection between humankind and the arboreal world. Along the way, he immerses himself in the lives of diverse woodlanders, dwelling in rustic shacks and cabins, pursuing the elusive wild apple groves of Kazakhstan, engaging in traditional coppicing in Suffolk, bathing beneath the majestic walnut trees of the Haut-Languedoc, and joining Aboriginal women in their hunt for bush plums in the outback.
Wildwood seamlessly weaves together autobiography, history, travelogue, and astute observations on natural history. It's an unparalleled journey into the heart of the woods, where Deakin posits we go 'to grow, learn and change'. This extraordinary work has garnered high praise, with Will Self deeming it 'enthralling' in the New Statesman, and the Independent lauding it as 'some of the finest naturalist writing for many years'.
For aficionados of Robert Macfarlane and Colin Tudge, Deakin's Wildwood offers a lyrical, literate, and insightful exploration of our sylvan bonds. As Craig Brown of the Mail on Sunday notes, it's 'enchanting, very funny', with each page unveiling fascinating nuggets of wisdom. This remarkable tome not only entertains but also deepens our appreciation for the natural wonders that surround us, cementing Deakin's status as one of the greatest nature writers of our time.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
