Wind, Sand and Stars, penned by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the mastermind behind The Little Prince, is a captivating blend of thrilling adventure and lyrical introspection. This Penguin Modern Classics edition, deftly translated by William Rees, offers readers a glimpse into the extraordinary life of an aviation trailblazer.
In 1926, Saint-Exupéry embarked on a perilous journey with the pioneering airline Latécoère, later known as Aéropostale. His mission: to forge the first mail routes across the treacherous Sahara and Andes. This autobiographical masterpiece weaves together encounters with nomadic Arabs and other hair-raising exploits, culminating in the author's miraculous survival following a crash in the Libyan Desert in 1936.
Saint-Exupéry posits that "self-discovery comes when a man measures himself against an obstacle." Through his vivid prose, he invites readers to explore the profound insights that emerge when one is pushed to the very limits of human endurance. This work is not merely a recounting of events, but a philosophical journey into the heart of the human spirit.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-44), a French-born writer and aviator, left an indelible mark on literature with his poetic evocations of flight in works such as Southern Mail and Night Flight. His later writings, including Wind, Sand and Stars and Flight to Arras, delve deeper into his humanistic philosophy. Tragically, Saint-Exupéry's plane vanished during a World War II mission, adding a layer of mystery to his already legendary status.
For those enthralled by Wind, Sand and Stars, Woody Guthrie's Bound for Glory, also available in Penguin Modern Classics, offers a similarly captivating exploration of the human condition. As André Maurois aptly described him, Saint-Exupéry is "a Conrad of the air ... Like Conrad, Saint-Exupéry is a poet of action."

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
