Discover the extraordinary journey of Dr Waheed Arian, as featured on Desert Island Discs and The Changemakers docuseries. This Waterstones Paperback of the Year has been lauded by Khaled Hosseini as 'a riveting story of loss, exile, and rebirth', and hailed by James O'Brien as 'one of the most incredible life stories you will ever hear'.
Born amidst the chaos of war-torn Afghanistan, Arian's earliest recollections are of explosions. His personal experience with medicine's transformative power ignited a passion to heal others. But how does a lad with nothing dare to dream of becoming a physician?
Escaping conflict, Arian spent his formative years in Pakistani refugee camps, often sharing cramped quarters with up to ten others, bereft of basic amenities and schooling. Undeterred, he embarked on a journey of self-education, procuring textbooks from street vendors and mastering English via the BBC World Service.
At fifteen, Arian was clandestinely transported to the UK with a mere hundred dollars to his name. Despite being advised to set his sights on driving a taxi, the young man from Kabul harboured loftier aspirations. Battling PTSD and anxiety, he devoted himself to relentless study, eventually securing places to read medicine at Cambridge University, Imperial College, and Harvard.
Not content with his role as an NHS A&E doctor, Arian established Arian Teleheal in 2015. This groundbreaking charity facilitates knowledge exchange between medical professionals in conflict zones and resource-poor nations with their counterparts in developed countries, saving countless lives in the process.
This poignant memoir, reminiscent of 'Educated' and 'War Doctor', chronicles the tale of a boy who recognised education's power and dared to dream of helping others. It's a testament to courage, ambition, and indomitable resilience in the face of life's myriad challenges.
Dr Waheed Arian's remarkable achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including UNESCO's Global Hero Award, the Who Cares Wins Best Doctor Award, and The Times's Man of the Year Award.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
