This exquisitely crafted tome offers readers an in-depth guide to five diverse methods of nurturing ourselves through the stewardship of nature's bounty. As David Holmgren, co-founder of Permaculture, notes, it provides the essential know-how for sustainable living. Costa Georgiadis suggests that this book has the potential to transform both individual lives and entire communities, whilst Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm hails it as the definitive self-sufficiency manual from the esteemed educational facilitator, Milkwood. Indira Naidoo describes it as a delightful guide to cultivating, consuming, and coexisting in harmony with the natural world.
The abilities we acquire weave the fabric of our existence. Are you keen to learn how to cultivate your own food? Perhaps you're intrigued by beekeeping, or wish to discover how to forage for edible seaweed along the coast or wild greens by the riverside? Maybe you're curious about mushroom cultivation or perfecting your tomato-growing technique? This book invites you to embrace these skills and make them your own.
Conceived to be enjoyed with a steaming cuppa at hand and a notebook at the ready, Milkwood provides all the essentials for embarking on a more self-sufficient lifestyle. From do-it-yourself projects to wild fermentation recipes, the comprehensive knowledge and practical guidance within these pages will captivate and motivate your entire family to start growing, keeping, cooking, and crafting.
Milkwood is not only the name of Kirsten Bradley and Nick Ritar's inaugural farm but also their school, where anyone can acquire skills for down-to-earth living. Kirsten, Nick, and their team of educators offer courses on the topics covered in this book, as well as permaculture design, natural building, and much more. The couple resides on a small regenerative farm near Daylesford, where they produce many of their daily necessities, from sprouted grain for their chickens to the ingredients that comprise their evening meals.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
