Hetta Howes presents a captivating addition to medieval scholarship, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of women often overlooked by history. This groundbreaking work delves into the minds and experiences of medieval women, challenging our preconceptions and revealing a world far more complex than previously imagined.
Despite the scarcity of written records from women during the Middle Ages, four remarkable individuals managed to leave behind their thoughts and experiences. Marie de France, Julian of Norwich, Christine de Pizan, and Margery Kempe - a poet, a mystic, a widow, and a 'troublesome wife' respectively - each defied the misogynistic norms of their time, pioneering new frontiers in women's writing and providing invaluable insights into medieval life and politics.
Howes' meticulous research brings these four iconic women to life, challenging our assumptions about medieval European women. Her work reveals that women could earn money, live independently, and experience the full spectrum of human emotions and experiences, much like we do today.
This enthralling book offers a vivid and immersive journey into the everyday lives of medieval women, retelling some of these stories for a general audience for the first time. It explores how women of the era grappled with concepts of sex, death, and spirituality, and how they carved out spaces for themselves in a world that often sought to silence them.
Praised for its brilliant revelations, meticulous research, and lively narrative, this book has been hailed as a celebration of female ambition and endeavour. It offers a fresh perspective on medieval history, making visible aspects of women's lives that have long been overlooked or deemed inconvenient. Howes' work is not just a historical account, but a spirited exploration of how medieval women faced trials and fought back against the constraints of their time.

Sherlock & Pages is a little bookshop with a big heart. We are based in Frome, Somerset, England and curate lists of books in the areas we are passionate about – landscape, nature, history, and heritage. In short, the conservation of all we’ve inherited and all we are responsible to pass on. We aim to inspire and be inspired, to form a literary culture of care and passion about this precious planet we call home.
This is a shop where you might find something you haven’t seen before, and we like to think we’ve got something for everyone. We choose each of our books with care and for a reason. This is because our physical store is small but beautifully formed, holding only around 1200 titles at any one time. We try and recreate the feel of the shop wherever we are online, to reflect our niche categories and personality.
We have an active social media presence and aim to share our story with all our friends. The long-term goal is to build a hub for the books and writers we believe in. Who knows where our adventure will lead but by supporting Sherlock & Pages you’re helping us to add a further layer of magic to our little corner of the world. If you haven’t visited our physical store, one day you might just make a literary pilgrimage down to Somerset.
Our tagline is ‘Long Live the Hedgerows’ and our symbol a hibernating dormouse. If you want to support an independent with a unique character and which will share stories with you for years to come, then choose Sherlock & Pages. The world needs bookshops with soul, for they are ‘citadels of light.’
